A powerful earthquake shook Bangladesh on Friday morning, sending residents rushing out of buildings as tremors rippled across the country at 10:38am.
The tremor struck at 10:38am, shaking several districts in Bangladesh as well as parts of India. The US Geological Survey (USGS) recorded the magnitude at 5.5 on the Richter scale, while the Bangladesh Meteorological Department reported it at 5.7.
According to the USGS, the epicentre was located seven kilometres from Ghorashal in Narsingdi, at a depth of 10 kilometres.
Earlier the same morning, Pakistan experienced a 5.2-magnitude quake, followed by the stronger jolt that hit Bangladesh a few hours later.

In Dhaka, buildings swayed violently, prompting residents to rush outside in fear. Reports from multiple neighbourhoods said floor tiles cracked and household items fell from tables as the tremor rippled through the city. In Badda’s Link Road area, a building reportedly leaned onto an adjacent structure.
Cracks have also appeared in a building in Moghbazar, while structural fissures were observed at Shamsunnahar Hall of Dhaka University.
Authorities are continuing to assess damage across affected areas.
