Stocks in Bangladesh continued to slide on Wednesday as the DSEX, the benchmark index of the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE), closed 1.18 percent lower than the previous day at 5473.15 points.
The downturn was reflected across other indices as well, with the Shariah-based DSES index losing 1.31 percent to end at 1188.23 points while the blue-chip DS30 index shed 1.07 percent to settle at 2129.90 points.
The market’s daily turnover, which is a key indicator of investor activity, also notched a notable decline of 19.31 percent to hit Tk 949.96 crore.
And with 2.57 lakh trades executed across 397 scrips, 43 saw their prices advance while 313 experienced a decline and 41 stocks did not see any price fluctuation.
Shares of Robi Axiata PLC led the market in terms of trade volume, with 13.6 crore issues changing hands to contribute Tk 42.42 crore.
Orion Infusion Ltd followed closely, accounting for Tk 42.40 crore, while Khan Brothers PP Woven Bag Industries Ltd added Tk 31.12 crore. However, block trades made up just 4 percent of the turnover.
Stocks in the A-category bore the brunt, with 176 scrips failing to maintain or advance their value.
Sector-wise, non-banking financial institutions (NBFIs) saw the steepest drop of 3.61 percent followed by fuel and power (1.94 percent), engineering (1.57 percent) and telecommunications (1.38 percent).
The food and allied (0.71 percent), pharmaceutical (0.51 percent), and banking (0.45 percent) sectors also experienced corrections.
In terms of individual performance, Tamijuddin Textile Mills PLC led the gainers as its share value grew 9.99 percent. Fine Foods Limited and CVO Petrochemical Refinery PLC followed with gains of 5.20 percent and 5.08 percent, respectively.
However, the losers’ list was topped by Trust Islami Life Insurance Ltd, which saw a significant decline of 9.96 percent. Rupali Life Insurance Company Ltd and Generation Next Fashions Ltd also faced notable losses of 9.35 percent and 8.82 percent, respectively.
At the Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE), the All-Share Price Index (CASPI) mirrored the trend, decreasing by 0.92 percent to close at 15427.48 points.
