The Dhaka stock market extended its losing streak for a second consecutive session on Monday as investors locked in recent gains from a post-budget rally, while geopolitical uncertainties over the Strait of Hormuz added further pressure on sentiment.
The broad-based DSEX index of the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) fell 1.5 per cent, to close at 5,554 points, down from 5,640 points in the previous session.
The DS30 index dropped 1.65 per cent to 2,110 points.
The session opened on a subdued note as selling pressure dominated from the outset, driven by profit-taking behaviour and weakening risk appetite, EBL Securities Research team wrote in their post-closing market commentary.
Across-the-board selling intensified through the day, keeping the benchmark index under sustained pressure, they added.
Turnover at the Dhaka bourse fell 12.6 per cent to Tk876.1 crore.
Total trades declined 5.2 per cent to 238,925, while trade volume dropped 12.6 per cent to 287 million shares, indicating softer participation across the market.
Pharmaceuticals and chemicals led turnover with a 16.4 per cent share of total transactions, followed by the engineering and textiles sectors, occupying over 11 per cent of the total turnover each.
Most sectors ended lower. Miscellaneous stocks posted the steepest fall of 3.5 per cent, followed by the information technology sector’s 2.9 per cent, financial institutions’ 2.8 per cent, and services and real estate’s 2.6 per cent contribution to the daily total on the DSE.
Mutual funds declined 2.5 per cent, while banks, cement, engineering, textiles, telecommunications, travel and leisure and pharmaceuticals also closed in negative territory.
Beximco Pharmaceuticals was the most traded stock with a turnover of Tk66.26 crore, followed by Summit Alliance Port, National Feed Mill, Robi Axiata and BD Thai Foods.
