Mitchell Starc has made his return to Australia’s ODI set-up for the upcoming three-match series against India, beginning on 19 October in Perth. This will be the fast bowler’s first outing of the season after sitting out the South Africa series, as he manages his workload ahead of this summer’s Ashes.
Joining Starc in the 15-man squad are Matthew Short and Mitchell Owen, who return after recovering from a side strain and concussion respectively. Matthew Renshaw has also been called up following strong performances for Australia A and Queensland.
Mitchell Marsh will continue to lead the side with Pat Cummins opting out of the white-ball assignment to focus on his fitness ahead of the Ashes, which begins on 21 November.
Cricket Australia have also confirmed the squad for the first two T20Is of the five-match series against India, which will run from 29 October to 8 November, forming part of the preparation for the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
The ODI squad features a blend of experience and youth, with Alex Carey, Travis Head, and Josh Inglis forming the core of the batting line-up, alongside all-rounders Cooper Connolly, Cameron Green, and captain Marsh. The pace attack includes Josh Hazlewood, Nathan Ellis, Xavier Bartlett, Ben Dwarshuis, and Starc, with Bartlett and Dwarshuis offering lower-order batting strength. Adam Zampa is the sole frontline spinner.
Carey will miss the opening ODI in Perth as he turns out for the South Australian Redbacks in the Sheffield Shield, but he is expected to return for the final two matches of the series.
Notable omissions from the ODI squad include Marnus Labuschagne, Sean Abbott, Aaron Hardie and Matthew Kuhnemann, all of whom featured in Australia’s last ODI assignment against South Africa in August.
In the T20I squad, Inglis and Ellis return, with the former recovering from a calf injury and the latter returning after missing the Chappell-Hadlee series for the birth of his first child. Glenn Maxwell, however, remains sidelined after a wrist injury sustained in the nets.
Inglis is expected to keep wicket, replacing Josh Phillipe and Alex Carey from the previous T20I squad against New Zealand.
The T20I batting unit includes Head, Marsh, Tim David, Inglis, Short and Owen, while Marcus Stoinis retains his spot in Maxwell’s absence. The pace options feature Dwarshuis, Bartlett, Hazlewood, and Ellis, with Matthew Kuhnemann joining Zampa as the spin duo.
Commenting on the selections, national selector George Bailey said, “We have named a squad for the ODI series and first two games of the T20 series as there will be some management through the back end of the series as individuals prepare for the summer through Sheffield Shield cricket. The majority of the T20 squad will remain together as it’s an important period in the build towards the World Cup next year, however we are trying to strike a balance to ensure we simultaneously prepare certain individuals for the Test series ahead.”
Following the ODI series, Cameron Green will return to Western Australia to focus on red-ball preparations for the Ashes.
