Inspector General of Police (IGP) Md Ali Hossain Fakir has urged newly appointed police officers to stand by the people and earn public trust by performing their duties with honesty, sincerity and neutrality.

He said the new officers must play a pioneering role in meeting public expectations and building a sustainable and safe Bangladesh.

The IGP made the remarks on Thursday morning while addressing a pre-joining orientation briefing for assistant superintendents of police (ASPs) of the 43rd Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS) Police batch, posted to various units, at the Hall of Integrity in Police Headquarters.

The IGP said the present elected democratic government was carrying out its responsibilities amid enormous public expectations following 17 years of what he described as fascist rule.

In the current circumstances, Bangladesh Police has also had to develop a new roadmap, placing particular emphasis on public expectations, human rights and sensitivity towards women, children and elderly citizens.

He said the newly posted police officers must take on the challenge of meeting public expectations with renewed enthusiasm and commitment.

Every police officer must stand by the people as an ambassador of the force, he added.

The IGP further said policing was both a service and a challenge. Police personnel must discharge their responsibilities while addressing the various challenges facing society and the state following the mass uprising of 5 August.

Describing the new officers as future police leaders, Ali Hossain Fakir said they must prepare themselves to meet emerging challenges as circumstances change. They must continually enrich themselves with new knowledge and experience, he added.

He said officers must maintain complete neutrality in discharging their duties and give the highest priority to laws and regulations.

At the same time, they must serve the public with professionalism. Effective policing can only be ensured by building relationships of trust with the people, he said.

During the programme, several newly posted officers shared their experiences of field-level training.

They pledged to discharge their duties professionally and earn public trust through effective service delivery.

In his address as chair, Additional IGP (Administration) AKM Awlad Hossain urged the new officers to perform their duties with dedication and professionalism to meet the nation’s expectations.

Additional IGP (Finance) Md Akram Hossain, Additional IGP (Human Resource Management) Khondokar Rafiqul Islam, Additional IGP (Development) Sardar Nurul Amin, Additional IGP (Logistics and Asset Acquisition) Md Mushfequr Rahman, Additional IGP (Crime and Operations) Md Sayedur Rahman and Additional IGP (Audit and Inspection) and head of the newly formed Cyber Police Unit Md Iqbal Hossain attended the programme, alongside other senior police officials.

DIG (Administration) Md Humayun Kabir moderated the event.

A total of 72 officers have joined Bangladesh Police as ASPs from the 43rd BCS Police batch, comprising 66 men and six women.
