A local leader of the Sramik Dal was injured when masked assailants opened fire on him in Raozan, Chattogram on Friday evening.
The incident occurred around 7pm in front of Chowdhury Market in Ward-9 of Raozan municipality.
The victim, Mehedi Hasan, 32, serves as the Organizational Secretary of the Upazila unit of Sramik Dal, and resident of Kazipara of the same ward.
According to eyewitnesses, Mehedi Hasan was returning home after offering prayers at Shah Auliya Jame Mosque when a group of people wearing masks opened fire on him and fled the scene.
Raozan Upazila Sramik Dal President Rafiqul Alam said six bullets were fired in an apparent attempt to kill Mehedi Hasan.
One bullet struck his right chest while another hit his leg. Mehedi was immediately admitted to a private hospital in Chattogram for treatment.
Sajedul Islam, Officer-in-Charge of Raozan Police Station, said the identities of the attackers have not yet been confirmed. Police are investigating the incident and working to apprehend those responsible.
