Former Netherlands midfielder Wesley Sneijder believes Portugal, led by Cristiano Ronaldo, have a stronger chance of winning the 2026 World Cup than Lionel Messi’s Argentina. Speaking ahead of the tournament, which will be held across the United States, Mexico and Canada next June, Sneijder said Portugal’s squad depth makes them one of the favourites.
“The Portuguese team is very strong,” Sneijder said. “In my view, they are among the favourites. That is why I would say Ronaldo has a better chance of winning the World Cup than Messi.”
The 2010 World Cup finalist, who starred for clubs such as Real Madrid and Inter Milan and lifted the Champions League with Inter, also offered his view on Argentina’s triumph in Qatar. “Argentina played a great World Cup in Qatar,” Sneijder said. “They were a little fortunate as well. Overall, I think Portugal are the better team.”
The 2026 edition will feature a record 48 teams for the first time, promising more drama, competition and excitement for football fans worldwide.
