A senior Awami League leader was brutally murdered in Sitakunda, Chattogram, late on Wednesday night. The incident occurred around 11pm in Golabaria-Taltola embankment area of Muradpur Union.
Sitakunda police officer-in-charge Mohinul Islam confirmed, the victim, Md Shamim, 40, served as the organisational secretary of ward nine of Sitakunda Pourashava Awami League. He resided in South Shivpur of the pourashava.
Police are questioning two individuals in connection with the killing, though no arrests have been made and their identities have not been disclosed.
Authorities said the murder does not appear politically and likely stems from a personal dispute.
OC Mohinul Islam told Times of Bangladesh that Shamim’s body was recovered, a preliminary report completed, and the corpse sent to Chattogram Medical College Hospital for post-mortem.
“This is not a political case,” he said.
He added “Investigation has started and two individuals are being questioned. No arrests have been made yet.”
Shamim’s brother, Mohammad Selim, said “Shamim had gone to his in-laws’ house with his wife on Wednesday night. Around 10.30pm, several individuals lured him out and took him to the embankment, where he was severely beaten, hacked, and his leg tendons were cut.”
Selim added that Shamim had a dispute about 15 days ago with a local man named Iran, which may have led to the attack.
Police continue to investigate the case.
