‘Sinners’ won best ensemble at the 32nd Screen Actors Guild Awards on Sunday, boosting its chances ahead of the upcoming Academy Awards.
The win marks a significant moment in the awards season after ‘One Battle After Another’, directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, had dominated major ceremonies including the Golden Globe Awards and BAFTA Awards. The victory for director Ryan Coogler suggests a closer race for best picture at the Oscars.
Michael B. Jordan also won best male actor for his performance in Sinners, beating favourite Timothée Chalamet. In the female category, Jessie Buckley won best female actor for Hamnet.
Supporting awards went to Sean Penn for One Battle After Another and Amy Madigan for ‘Weapons’.
In television, ‘The Studio’ won best comedy series and ‘The Pitt’ took the drama series prize.
Veteran actor Harrison Ford was honoured with the SAG-AFTRA Life Achievement Award, reflecting on his long career and saying he felt fortunate to still be working.
