Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) is monitoring the actions of Liberation War Affairs State Minister Ishraque Hossain, who took part in an anti-drug operation with a firearm at a slum adjacent to a railway line in the capital’s Gendaria area.
Md Shafiqul Islam, DMP additional commissioner and chief of the Detective Branch (DB), said this while responding to questions from journalists at a press conference at the DMP Media Centre on Sunday.
He also said that legal action would be taken if any violation of the law was found in connection with the incident.
Ishraque, who is also the lawmaker for Dhaka-6, was seen chasing people with a pistol during the drive in Old Dhaka on Saturday, raising questions about his role in law enforcement after police said they were informed only after six people had been detained.
At the conference, Shafiqul said, “The time has not yet come to evaluate this. We have seen what you have seen. The local deputy commissioner has been asked to examine the entire incident and submit a report. If there is any violation of the law here, DMP will definitely take legal action.”

In response to another question on whether a minister can carry out police work, he said he could not comment on the issue.
Addressing another query about Durga Puja security, the DB chief said senior police officers were in the field and adequate police personnel were performing security duties.
However, he expressed hope that Durga Puja would be held in a smooth, orderly and festive environment.
