Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has issued a strong condemnation and protest against Liberation War Affairs State Minister Ishraque Hossain for brandishing a pistol during an anti-drug drive in Gendaria, describing the incident as a “manifestation of a reign of terror”.
In a statement issued on Sunday, Assistant Secretary General of Jamaat and Secretary of the Central Publicity and Media Department, Ehsanul Mahboob Zubair, expressed severe condemnation and protest over the incident that occurred on Saturday afternoon.
Zubair alleged that the country has witnessed a proliferation of drugs and a deterioration of the law and order situation since the BNP government took power. He claimed that ministers, state ministers, and responsible officials are trying to divert public attention to cover up the government’s failures.
The statement noted that despite the presence of law enforcement agencies and the administration, a state minister taking the law into his own hands by brandishing a weapon, alongside the aggressive role of his bodyguards, was uncalled for, illegal, and unwanted. Zubair sought redress from responsible levels of the government regarding the matter.
Zubair further alleged that Ishrak Hossain attempted to instil fear and panic among the public by publishing a video of his actions on Facebook. He stated that such conduct amounts to a breach of oath and could embolden terrorists.
Jamaat called upon responsible officials at all levels of the government to ensure the strict enforcement of the law, raise public awareness, and adopt people-friendly methods to take action against all crimes, including drug offences.
