The body of a local leader of Shushashoner Jonno Nagorik (SHUJAN) was recovered in Gazipur early Thursday with his hands and legs tied.
The deceased, Kamruzzaman Molla, 65, served as vice president of the Gazipur district unit of the civic organisation and was also a contractor by profession.
According to police, the body was found around 12:30am in a sandy field beside a road in the Purba Dhirashram area of Gazipur city. The victim’s body had been wrapped in clothing, with both hands and legs tied.
Kamruzzaman, a resident of the Ward No. 50 of the city, had left his home on Wednesday morning to attend proceedings at the Gazipur court in connection with a case, family members said.
However, the hearing did not take place as the scheduled judge was absent. After leaving his lawyer’s chamber later in the day, he did not return home.
Concerned family members began searching for him when he did not come back even late at night.
Police later informed the family around 2am that a body matching his description had been recovered from the Dhirashram area.
Relatives suspect that the killing may be linked to disputes over business transactions.
Iftekhar Shishir, general secretary of the Gazipur district unit of SHUJAN, described Kamruzzaman as a dedicated and responsible leader of the organisation. He demanded a thorough investigation into the incident and exemplary punishment for those responsible.
Sub-Inspector Mizanur Rahman of Gazipur Sadar Police Station said the murder likely occurred sometime before 11pm on Wednesday, after which the perpetrators left the body beside the road.
Local residents spotted the body while passing through the area and informed the police. The body was later recovered and sent to the morgue of Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital for autopsy.
Police suspect the killing may have stemmed from previous enmity. Meanwhile, the victim’s son, Koushik Zaman, has filed a murder case with the police station.
