Shoriful Islam said he is not frustrated despite going 16 months without playing an ODI, as strong competition among Bangladesh’s pacers kept him out of the playing XI. He last featured in an ODI in December 2024 against the West Indies and had since remained in the squad without getting a game until returning against New Zealand on Friday.
Speaking ahead of the second ODI in Mirpur, on Sunday the left-arm pacer said he stayed focused on his basics and kept fighting with himself during the long wait, while continuing to play regularly in T20s.
“There is nothing to be frustrated about. Those who are playing are doing well, and those outside the squad are also good players. There is a healthy competition going on,” Shoriful said.
After a lengthy absence, his comeback performance was impressive as he bowled 10 overs, conceded just 27 runs with 2 maidens, and picked up 2 wickets.
Reflecting on his return, Shoriful said, “My last ODI was against the West Indies and then there was a gap. I was also out of the team during the Champions Trophy. But I always try to do the basic things. When the opportunity comes, I try to do well. I have fought with myself, and when the chance came, Alhamdulillah I tried to perform well.”
Shoriful also highlighted that such competition benefits the team, saying, “I came in the last match in place of Mustafizur bhai. If someone gets injured or moves out of the squad and a new player can come in and perform well, that is good for Bangladesh cricket.”
