US President Donald Trump said Saturday the suspect in a Washington media gala shooting was a “would‑be assassin,” adding the man was “armed with multiple weapons.”
The man charged past a security checkpoint, Trump told a press briefing at the White House, adding: “One officer was shot but saved by the fact that he was wearing a, obviously, a very good bulletproof vest.”
“We looked at all of the conditions that took place tonight, and I will say, you know, it’s not a particularly secure building,” the US leader added, AFP reports.

Jeffrey Carroll, Interim Chief of Police at Metropolitan Police Department, said the suspect “was armed with a shotgun, a handgun and multiple knives” as he ran through a checkpoint at the Washington Hilton before being intercepted, reports Al Jazeera.
“Law enforcement exchanged gunfire with the individual,” Carroll said, adding a US Secret Service officer was struck in his vest and taken to hospital, “in good spirits at this time.”
