Bangladesh chief selector Sajjad Ahmed Shipon has explained the key decisions behind the Women’s T20 World Cup squad, especially the choice to travel with only two main pacers and the inclusion of Taj Nehar.
Bangladesh will play the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in England and Wales from June 12. Before the main event, the team will leave on May 25 for a tri-series in Scotland as part of their preparation.
Shipon said the squad was built around Bangladesh’s strongest available bowling options.
“Who are our best bowlers? We made the team that way.” He also admitted Bangladesh still do not have enough depth in fast bowling.
“Obviously, we do not have enough options. Our pipeline is a very slow process.”
Fariha Islam Trisna and Marufa Akter are the two frontline pacers in the squad, while Ritu Moni offers another seam option.
Shipon said England’s summer conditions may not always help pace bowlers as much as expected. “Recently what I have seen is that in England the ball does not move that much in summer. It has almost become like subcontinent wickets.”
Because of that, Bangladesh may continue to depend heavily on spin unless conditions offer extra help for seamers.
Taj Nehar’s inclusion was another major talking point. While her statistics may not stand out, Shipon said Bangladesh selected her for flexibility and role value.
“We wanted someone who can cover any batting spot.” He said Taj can bat anywhere from opener to number six, making her a valuable option in a squad that needs balance.
Bangladesh are also trying to improve their finishing in the final overs. Taj’s ability to adapt across multiple batting positions was a major reason behind her selection.
For Bangladesh, the squad reflects a clear strategy. Spin remains the team’s biggest weapon, pace options are still limited, and Taj Nehar’s versatility could offer an important edge in England and Wales.
