Chattogram City Corporation Administrator Shahadat Hossain has said that 7 November is an important chapter in Bangladesh’s history, holding undeniable significance as a symbol of national unity, independence and solidarity.

“The 7 November Revolution is a source of inspiration for us. On this day, we broke the chains of subjugation and began a new journey,” he said.

He said the united role of soldiers and civilians marked the beginning of a new chapter in Bangladesh’s political history. The significance of the day remains particularly relevant in the current context. To sustain the country’s democratic progress and development, everyone must move forward together, upholding the ideals of former president Ziaur Rahman and drawing inspiration from the spirit of the Liberation War.

He made the remarks on Saturday afternoon while placing a wreath on behalf of Chattogram City Corporation at Biplob Udyan, a memorial site associated with Zia near Gate No. 2 in Sholoshahar, marking National Revolution and Solidarity Day.

Shahadat said the spirit of 7 November must be upheld to resist foreign dominance. Recalling Zia’s historic role in the 1971 Liberation War, he said soldiers and civilians freed Ziaur Rahman from detention on 7 November and brought him to the centre of state power.

He stressed the need to spread the spirit of 7 November among the younger generation to preserve the country’s independence and sovereignty and move the nation forward together.

The city corporation administrator described BNP founder Zia as a key architect of Bangladesh’s independence, sovereignty and democracy.

He said that when Zia declared independence in 1971, he knew he could face a court-martial for doing so. Despite the possible consequences, he took a courageous stand in support of the people’s aspiration for independence without considering his own fate.

Under his leadership, the country moved towards reconstruction and the process of empowering the people began, he added.
