One of the most talked-about comebacks in tennis is finally set to become reality. After nearly four years away from competitive tennis, legendary Serena Williams is returning to the court.
The 23-time Grand Slam singles champion is set to begin a new chapter by competing in the women’s doubles event at the Queen’s Club in London.
The 44-year-old last played a competitive match at the 2022 US Open. After exiting in the third round of that tournament, she had not been seen on the professional tennis circuit.
However, she confirmed her return on Monday through a video posted on social media. In the clip, Serena is seen on court wearing a white Nike outfit, while messages appear on her phone one after another. Alongside the video, she wrote, “Good news travels fast.”
Speculation about her possible return had intensified since December last year, when her name was reintroduced into the anti-doping programme. Participation in this programme is mandatory for players who wish to return to professional tennis. At the time, she dismissed the rumours on social media, saying, “Oh my God, I am not coming back. This is absolutely crazy.”
But the situation has now changed. She has been awarded a wildcard entry into the women’s doubles event at Queen’s Club. Reports suggest she is expected to partner with young Canadian player Victoria Mboko as she makes her return to competitive action.
The American’s 23 Grand Slam singles titles are the most by any woman in the Open era, placing her second on the all-time list behind Australia’s Margaret Court, who holds 24 titles.
