Online casino businessman Selim Pradhan has been shown arrested as a suspect in an attempted murder and explosives case filed with Gulshan Police Station in the capital.
Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Sefatullah passed the order on Monday afternoon in response to an application by the investigation officer.
State counsel Shamsuddoha Sumon confirmed the matter.
During the proceedings, defense lawyers opposed the arrest while the prosecution argued in favor. After hearing both sides, the court rejected Selim’s bail and ordered that he be sent to prison.
In the application, the investigation officer said Selim was an active leader and one of the key financiers of the previous government. Evidence has shown his direct instigation and financial support in assaults on students in Gulshan and Bhatara areas, and in the planned shooting of the complainant during efforts to suppress the anti‑discrimination student movement in 2024. For the sake of proper investigation, showing him arrested was deemed necessary.
According to the case statement, on 5 August, during the movement, gunfire was opened on protesting students and people at Bashatala in Naya Bazar under Gulshan Police Station.
Victim Md Touhid Mia was critically injured by gunshots. He later filed a case with the court, which named 88 individuals and listed another 100–200 unidentified persons as accused.
