The Appellate Division of Supreme Court has stayed a High Court order granting bail to former minister Dipu Moni in one case, while a Dhaka court rejected her bail petitions in two separate murder cases filed in connection with killings during the July uprising.
Justice Md Rezaul Haque of the Appellate Division’s Chamber Court issued the stay order following an application from the state, effectively staying the bail earlier granted by the High Court on June 3 in a case filed with Mohammadpur Police Station.
According to her lawyer, Romzan Ali Shikder, bail petitions had been submitted in seven cases filed with different police stations in the capital.
While the High Court issued rules in six of those cases, the stay order in the Mohammadpur case means she will remain in custody.
In a separate development on the same day, a Dhaka court rejected her bail petitions in two cases linked to killings during the July movement.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ashraful Haque rejected the bail application in the case filed over the murder of Monir, a scrap trader who was fatally shot during a student-led mass uprising in the Chankharpul area on August 5, according to prosecution Sub-Inspector Shah Alam.
The victim’s wife, Rozina Akter, filed the case with Shahbagh Police Station on 14 March, naming 351 accused and around 500 unidentified individuals.
In another case, Dipu Moni was denied bail in connection with the killing of Riazul Talukder, who was shot dead in Topkhana area of Paltan on 4 August.
The case was filed on 12 September by the victim’s colleague, Billal Hossain, naming 63 accused, including former prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
Dipu Moni, who served as foreign minister, education minister, and social welfare minister in the previous Awami League government, was arrested on 19 August, 2024, following the fall of the government on 5 August.
She is currently facing more than 38 cases involving allegations of murder, crimes against humanity, corruption, and incitement to violence.
