Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed described the comment on crossfire made by Inspector General of Police (IGP) Md Ali Hossain Fakir as an “accidental” remark. He added that a corrected explanation was later issued on behalf of the police.
Salahuddin mentioned that the inspector general of police is a simple-hearted person who made the comment unintentionally while speaking about strict application of the law. However, he added that making such a comment was neither right nor appropriate.
Speaking to the media on Tuesday, the home minister said the government does not want crossfire and maintains zero tolerance regarding this matter.
He stressed that the government will not allow extrajudicial killings, maintains an extremely strict stance on the issue, and will not tolerate extrajudicial killings or custodial deaths.
Salahuddin noted that the rule of law is the government’s primary goal, while the improvement of law and order is its chief priority. He added that no deaths from crossfire or custodial deaths have taken place so far.
However, the government will do whatever is necessary to curb crime and ensure proper legal measures.
Last Monday, at a programme in Chawkbazar in Old Dhaka in the capital, Md Ali Hossain Fakir, inspector general of police, said “crossfires” would be used if necessary, provided the government gives permission.
