Egypt captain Mohamed Salah returned to training on Tuesday and completed part of the squad session as he continued his recovery from a hamstring strain. The forward has increased his chances of featuring in Egypt’s World Cup last-32 match against Australia on Friday in Dallas.

Salah left the pitch during Egypt’s 1-1 draw with Iran in the final group match after suffering the injury. The substitution raised doubts over his availability for the first knockout fixture.

The Egyptian Football Association shared photographs from the team’s training base in Spokane that showed Salah back on the pitch with his team-mates. The post carried the caption, “The King is back”.

Egypt reached the knockout stage for the first time after finishing second in their group with five points. They ended the group level on points with Belgium but finished behind the group leaders on goal difference.

Salah has played a central role in Egypt’s World Cup campaign. The 34-year-old has scored one goal and supplied two assists in the tournament. His return to training gives Egypt encouragement as they prepare to face Australia for a place in the last 16.
