Shipping Minister Sheikh Rabiul Alam has urged newly graduated sailors to carry out their responsibilities with honesty, dedication and professionalism, stressing their role in opening up new markets for Bangladesh’s shipping sector.
“They will act as ambassadors of the country at sea, enhancing Bangladesh’s image abroad while contributing to the economy through remittances,” he said.
The minister made the remarks as chief guest at the 28th Pre-Sea Ratings Passing Out Parade of National Maritime Institute in Chattogram on Saturday.
Highlighting the broader purpose of education, he said it goes beyond textbooks to include the development of physical and mental capabilities. Equipped with the skills gained at the institute, he added, the graduates will emerge as modern professionals in ship navigation, vessel management and cargo operations.
“With sincerity and efficiency, Bangladesh will continue to compete with developed nations in international maritime transport,” he said.
The minister praised the institute’s training standards, noting that its disciplined environment, rigorous regulations and hands-on approach have earned recognition from global maritime bodies, including the International Maritime Organization and the European Union’s maritime safety authorities. “These cadets are valuable assets for their families and the nation,” he added.
Referring to the sector’s development, he said a key project to upgrade seafarer training was approved in 1992 under the leadership of Khaleda Zia. Implemented between 1993 and 1995, the initiative laid the foundation for the internationally recognised institute seen on Saturday.
Since its inception, around 4,500 sailors have graduated from the institute, with nearly 4,000 currently employed on domestic and international vessels, making significant contributions to the national economy, he said.
The minister added that the government led by Tarique Rahman is prioritising employment generation across potential sectors, including maritime, and remains committed to providing necessary support.
Earlier, the minister inspected the parade and distributed crests and certificates among outstanding graduates. Rabbi Islam Kanan from the engine department received the gold medal for overall excellence. In the second session, awards sponsored by various shipping companies and financial institutions were also presented.
Among others, Shipping Ministry Secretary Zakaria, Director General of the Department of Shipping Md Shafiul Bari, and NMI Principal Captain Ataur Rahman spoke at the event.
Chairman of Chattogram Port Authority Rear Admiral SM Moniruzzaman, Managing Director of Bangladesh Shipping Corporation Commodore Mahmudul Malek, along with military and civilian officials, shipowners, agents and family members of the graduates, were present.
