Sadie Sink may have arrived in Spider-Man: Brand New Day as Jean Grey, but director Destin Daniel Cretton’s latest comments suggest her role could carry significance far beyond the film itself.
Speaking to Deadline, Cretton revealed that the team deliberately chose Jean because they wanted a villain who reflected Peter Parker’s emotional journey rather than a conventional comic-book antagonist. That choice could prove particularly intriguing for the future of Spider-Man — and potentially for the wider MCU.
Cretton said the filmmakers explored different versions of Jean Grey’s comic-book history before settling on her story. They saw a parallel between Jean and Peter: both experienced trauma and lost people they loved. But while Jean was left with only one person as her community, Peter had people who rallied around him after Aunt May’s death.
That emotional connection makes Jean more than simply another powerful opponent. It also places a mutant character directly inside Peter Parker’s world, creating plenty of room for speculation about where the story could go next.
Cretton has not confirmed any wider mutant crossover. However, with Jean Grey now part of Spider-Man’s story, fans have obvious reason to wonder whether her presence could eventually help connect Peter to the X-Men side of the MCU.
Cretton also has a personal connection with Sink. He first worked with her when she was around 14 during The Glass Castle, before she joined Stranger Things. When her name came up for Jean, he said the reaction was essentially, “Oh, hell yeah.”
He praised her as emotionally present, professional and capable of going “there” when required.
For Cretton, Peter’s story ends on a hopeful note. But he also confirmed that another Spider-Man film is coming, while refusing to settle the debate over its ambiguous ending.
That leaves one tantalising question: could Jean Grey be the beginning of Spider-Man’s next big connection to Marvel’s mutant world?
