The long-standing tensions between J.K. Rowling and Emma Watson have intensified after the Harry Potter author shared a nearly 700-word statement on X (formerly Twitter), openly criticising the actress and disclosing details of a private note she claims Watson once sent her.
Rowling accused Watson of “undermining and misrepresenting” her while maintaining what she described as an “illusory” display of support. She alleged that Watson privately contacted her with a message of sympathy at a time when Rowling was facing serious threats, a gesture the writer now dismisses as selective and performative.
The rift between Rowling and several members of the Harry Potter cast began in 2020, when Rowling’s public comments on gender identity drew widespread criticism. While she has consistently denied accusations of transphobia, stars including Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Watson voiced support for transgender rights.
At the 2022 BAFTA Awards, Watson remarked that she was “here for all the witches”, a line Rowling considered inflammatory.
More recently, Watson appeared to strike a conciliatory tone, telling Jay Shetty’s ‘On Purpose’ podcast that she “loves and treasures” Rowling despite their differing views.
Rowling’s new statement, however, questioned the sincerity of those comments, suggesting they may have been influenced more by “shifting public opinion” than by genuine affection.
The author also argued that while she does not expect her former colleagues to share her beliefs, she objects to them continuing to act as “de facto spokespeople” for the fictional world she created.
