Rohit Sharma has reclaimed the spotlight of world cricket, becoming the new number one batter in the ICC ODI rankings after a stellar series against Australia. The Indian opener dethroned his compatriot and captain Shubman Gill to take the top spot, while also setting a world record by becoming the oldest player ever to reach number one in ODI history.
According to the latest ICC update, Rohit now sits at the summit with 781 rating points, moving two places up. Gill, meanwhile, has slipped from first to third, behind Afghanistan’s Ibrahim Zadran.
The 38-year-old produced an outstanding performance in the recently concluded ODI series against Australia, finishing as the leading run-scorer. After a duck in the opening match, Rohit bounced back with a half-century in the second and a match-winning unbeaten century in the final fixture, helping India seal the series.
He amassed 202 runs at an average of 101, a performance that has propelled him to the top of the world rankings for the first time in his illustrious career—an achievement arriving 18 years after his international debut.
At 38 years and 182 days, Rohit Sharma has become the oldest player in history to reach the number one position in ODI batting rankings. This milestone marks a new chapter for the veteran opener, who had never previously held the top spot despite his long and decorated career.
Rohit is only the fifth Indian batter ever to hold the number one ranking, joining the elite company of Sachin Tendulkar, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Virat Kohli, and Shubman Gill.
Several other players have also seen changes in their rankings following recent series results. Rohit’s teammate Shreyas Iyer has moved up one place to ninth, while New Zealand’s Daryl Mitchell climbed to fifth. England’s white-ball captain Harry Brook, on the back of a brilliant century against New Zealand, jumped 23 places to 25th. Pakistan opener Imam-ul-Haq has risen to 40th.
New Zealand’s Michael Bracewell improved seven spots to 75th, USA’s Milind Kumar climbed 17 places to 78th, and India’s Axar Patel advanced 14 places to 90th.
In the ODI bowling list, Afghanistan’s Rashid Khan retains his number one position. New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner has moved up three places to fourth, while Australia’s Josh Hazlewood and Adam Zampa advanced to eighth and twelfth respectively. India’s Mohammed Siraj is now 16th after moving up one place.
West Indies’ Akeal Hosein, who impressed in the series against Bangladesh, jumped 16 places to 44th. England’s Brydon Carse rose 24 places to 68th, India’s Washington Sundar climbed 22 spots to 73rd, and Australia’s Xavier Bartlett made a huge leap of 37 places to 95th.
Among the all-rounders, Afghanistan’s Azmatullah Omarzai continues to lead the rankings. India’s Axar Patel has broken into the top ten, moving to eighth, while USA duo Milind Kumar and Harmeet Singh improved to 34th and 60th respectively. West Indies’ Akeal Hosein also advanced 22 places to 72nd.
India’s Jasprit Bumrah remains the top-ranked Test bowler, with New Zealand’s Matt Henry rising to second and India’s Mohammed Siraj climbing to 11th. South Africa’s Keshav Maharaj made a significant nine-place jump to 13th, while Zimbabwe’s Blessing Muzarabani moved up to 21st.
In the all-rounders’ rankings, Ravindra Jadeja continues to hold the number one position. South Africa’s Wiaan Mulder has moved up to fifth, Kagiso Rabada climbed to 11th, and Keshav Maharaj improved to 13th.
