A Rohingya youth was killed and another critically injured in a clash between two armed groups over power control in Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar, on Friday.
The deceased was identified as Md Ayas, 22, while the injured youth was identified as Syed Mohammad, 24. Both are reportedly members of the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Organisation (RSO).
The incident took place around 12:15pm on Friday in Blocks D-03 and D-07 of Rohingya Refugee Camp No 15.
Ahsan Khan, additional superintendent of police and officer-in-charge of the 8 APBn Media Wing, said the clash was triggered by a power struggle between ARSA and RSO members.
According to him, ARSA members abducted the two youths from their shelters around 10pm on Thursday and held them captive. They were severely beaten, killing Ayas on the spot and leaving Syed Mohammad critically injured.
The attackers also extorted Tk3 lakh from the victims’ families during their detention.
Police have received complaints against five ARSA members. All the accused live in different blocks of Camp No. 15.
Syed Mohammad is receiving treatment at MSF Hospital near the camp. Ahsan Khan said legal proceedings were underway and additional law enforcement personnel had been deployed to maintain order in the camp.
