River researcher, organiser, and writer Sheikh Rokon has been awarded the “Pollima Green Gold Medal-2025” in recognition of his contributions to river and environmental conservation.

Rokon is the founder and general secretary of Riverine People, a citizens’ organisation focused on river protection.

The award was presented at an event on Saturday night at the Pollima Sangsad Conference Hall in Khilgaon, Dhaka, organised on the occasion of World Environment Day, according to a press release on Sunday.

State Minister for Road Transport and Railways Habibur Rashid Habib attended as chief guest. Pollima Green Chairman Awal Kamruzzaman Farid presided over the event, with Daily Desh Rupantor Editor Mustafiz Shafi as special guest.

In his speech, State Minister Habibur Rashid Habib said, “Rivers are the lifeblood of Bangladesh. If rivers survive, Bangladesh will survive.”

He noted that the current government has adopted national programmes to restore rivers and canals. “If social organisations like Pollima Sangsad and Pollima Green, and researchers like Sheikh Rokon come forward, the protection of the country’s rivers, canals, and environment will become easier,” he added.

Speaking as special guest, Mustafiz Shafi said the relationship of Bangladesh’s history, culture, and public life with rivers is inseparable. “Therefore, river protection must be seen as a civic duty.”

He called upon everyone to come forward to build an environmentally friendly society and also emphasised ensuring a safe environment for children.

Upon receiving the award, Sheikh Rokon said many rivers are being lost due to unplanned development, encroachment, and pollution.

“Rivers are endangered today due to weaknesses in governance. If rivers are protected, society and the state will also be protected,” he warned.

Also speaking at the event were Mubarak Ahmad Khan, inventor of the biodegradable “Sonali Bag” made from jute and recipient of the Pollima Green Award in 2018; Pollima Sangsad founder president Mu Hafizur Rahman Moyna; president Anisur Rahman Liton; general secretary Abu Haider; and Pollima Green general secretary Kazi Ismail Kimu.
