The government has extended the tenure of the National Independent Investigation Commission, which is reinvestigating the 2009 BDR mutiny, for a fourth time.
According to a notification issued by the Cabinet Division on Monday, the commission’s term has been extended until November 30. The extension takes effect from November 1.
The seven-member commission, headed by retired Major General ALM Fazlur Rahman, was first formed on 24 December last year and initially given 90 days to complete its investigation. Its tenure was later extended by another three months.
Later in September, the government extended the time for one month till October 30 before this latest extension.
The commission has been tasked with the reexamination of the BDR mutiny that took place between 25 and 26 February 2009 on the premises of the BGB headquarters in Pilkhana, leaving 74 dead, including 57 army officers.
The commission is meant to uncover the full nature of the incident, identify those responsible, and investigate individuals, groups, or institutions involved in the killings, conspiracy, evidence destruction, and incitement, according to the cabinet notification.
