Real Madrid have decided to end their partnership with head coach Xabi Alonso with immediate effect.
The club confirmed the news in an official statement on Tuesday. It said the decision came by mutual agreement between both sides. Alonso will no longer continue as the first team coach.
Alonso took charge in June 2025. He replaced Carlo Ancelotti, who left the club to take over the Brazil national football team.
His time at the club showed early promise. However, the situation became difficult in recent weeks. Injuries hit the squad. Results dropped. Problems also grew inside the dressing room.
A recent Spanish Super Cup semi final win against Atletico Madrid had raised hopes that Alonso would get more time. That belief did not last long.
The final defeat to FC Barcelona pushed the club to act. Club president Florentino Perez and the board decided to make the change.
In its statement, the club praised Alonso for his service. It said he will always have the respect and love of Madrid fans. The club also said Real Madrid will always be his home.
The club thanked Alonso and his coaching staff for their effort and commitment. It wished them well for the future.
Real Madrid will now look for a new head coach. Names linked with the job include Castilla coach Alvaro Arbeloa and former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.
