Police have filed a charge sheet against cricketer Tofael Ahmed Rayhan, accusing him of raping a young woman at a hotel in Dhaka’s Gulshan.
Gulshan Police Station’s Sub-inspector Md Samiul Islam confirmed the matter on Thursday.
SI Samiul, also investigation officer of the case, said, “The charge sheet has been submitted to the court under Section 9(1) of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act. Witnesses will appear before the court to prove the allegations.”
The charge sheet submitted to the court stated that the victim was raped multiple times at different places. Tofael, a pace-bowling all-rounder, is a player for the Bangladesh “A” team.
The victim filed the rape case with Gulshan Police Station on 1 August. Following the case, on 24 September the High Court granted the accused six weeks of anticipatory bail.
At the same time, he was ordered to surrender before Dhaka’s Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal before the bail expired. However, even after the expiry of the bail period, he did not surrender to the tribunal.
According to the case, accused Tofael became acquainted with the victim through Facebook in January. They began communicating via Facebook messenger. At one stage, Tofael proposed a relationship to the woman. Although she initially refused, he persuaded her by promising marriage.
On 31 January, the accused took her to a hotel in Gulshan and allegedly raped her. At that time, he assured her that he would marry her within a few days. But later, when the woman asked him about marriage, he refused, the case cited.
The charge sheet said that after reviewing the first day’s incident, the hotel booking slip, the medical report of the rape, and other relevant matters, the allegations against Tofael were found to be true.
The plaintiff said, “He (Tofael) established a relationship with me by promising marriage. Even after approaching his family to resolve the issue, I received no result. At one stage, I submitted a written complaint to the BCB president.… I seek justice from the court.”
