Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has rejected a proposal for the Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) Administrator to visit France to acquire knowledge on energy-saving street lighting technology, instead approving only the corporation’s executive engineer for the trip.
The decision was detailed in a summary of the travel proposal sent from the Local Government Division to the Prime Minister’s Office on Monday (8 June).
According to the prime minister’s instructions, any knowledge gained by an engineer regarding such technology would be beneficial to the work of the Rajshahi City Corporation.
The prime minister noted that as the Administrator of the Rajshahi City Corporation is not an engineer, his participation in the visit carries no significance. Consequently, only the proposed Executive Engineer (Electrical) may undertake the visit if necessary.
Furthermore, the prime minister directed that the cooperation of the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) and other engineering universities should be sought for such innovative work in the future.
Prime Minister’s Press Secretary Saleh Shibli confirmed the veracity of these instructions.
The initial proposal, sent by the Local Government Division, sought approval for RCC Administrator Mahfuzur Rahman and Executive Engineer (Electrical) ABM Asaduzzaman Sweet to visit the Signify France Outdoor Lighting Application Centre.
The visit, following an invitation from Signify Bangladesh Limited, aimed to provide first-hand knowledge of new energy-saving technologies for street lighting.
This decision follows a recent move by the prime minister to reject a similar proposal for the Mayor of Chattogram to visit the United States to observe mosquito extermination methods.
