RAB-13 has arrested a drug dealing couple in connection with the Rakib murder case in Rangpur, following a dispute over control of drug business and a domestic altercation.
The arrested individuals are drug trader Momin and his wife Sweety.
RAB-13 Company Commander Md Mahidul Islam disclosed the information at a press briefing held at the headquarters of RAB-13 at around 11:30pm on Monday.
He said ‘The arrests were made with the help of technology-based intelligence through an operation at the house of Rubel Mia in Sahapur village under Imadpur union of Mithapukur upazila.”
According to RAB, Rakib was killed in broad daylight on April 9 at Masuapara intersection in the city. He was hacked to death with a Chinese axe by drug trader Momin and others from the Tatipara area.
The RAB official said there had been a long-standing conflict between Rakib and Momin over control of the drug trade. Earlier this year, on January 14, Rakib was attacked and one of his legs was crippled.
He also said that a day before the killing, Rakib had an argument with Momin’s wife Sweety. During the incident, Rakib allegedly slapped her. The next day, he was hacked to death.
Following the killing, supporters of Rakib vandalised shops and houses in the Masuapara area on 10 April.
RAB said efforts are underway to arrest other suspects involved in both incidents.
The deceased Rakib was involved in the politics of the city unit of Jubo Dal. He was the son of Abdus Samad of the area.
