Qatar has reaffirmed its support for diplomatic efforts aimed at easing tensions between the United States and Iran, warning against any disruption of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.
In a phone conversation with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, Qatar’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani expressed Doha’s full backing for ongoing mediation initiatives to secure a comprehensive agreement to end the crisis, according to a statement from Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, reports Al Jazeera.
Sheikh Mohammed stressed that all parties must respond positively to mediation efforts to ensure lasting peace and stability in the region. He cautioned that any attempt to close the Strait of Hormuz or use it as leverage in negotiations would exacerbate the crisis and threaten the vital interests of regional states.
“Freedom of navigation remains a fundamental and non-negotiable principle,” he said, urging compliance with international law and respect for good neighbourly relations.
Meanwhile, Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi held a separate phone call with Sheikh Mohammed to discuss regional mediation efforts. The ministers reviewed Pakistan-mediated talks between Washington and Tehran and highlighted the need for coordinated international action to support the mediation process and prevent further escalation.
Both officials emphasised the importance of reaching a sustainable solution that addresses the root causes of the crisis, prioritising regional stability and the welfare of their populations.
