Russian President Vladimir Putin has congratulated Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on assuming office as the 23rd President of Bangladesh.
The Russian Embassy in Dhaka confirmed the matter in a message issued on Thursday.
In his congratulatory message, Putin wished President Mirza Fakhrul good health, prosperity and success in his future endeavours. He also expressed his hopes for the success of the newly elected president’s efforts towards ensuring the wellbeing of the friendly people of Bangladesh.
The Russian president’s message is being viewed as significant in the context of the longstanding friendly relations between Russia and Bangladesh, reflecting the importance of bilateral ties between the two countries.
Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was sworn in as the 23rd President of Bangladesh on 21 August. A day earlier, on 20 August, he was elected president in a vote held in the Jatiya Sangsad, securing 255 votes. His rival, Oli Ahmed, received 88 votes.
Since taking office, Mirza Fakhrul has received congratulatory messages from several countries and foreign missions. Earlier, China and the United States also extended their greetings to the newly elected president.
