Protests have continued in various areas of Bandarban demanding the immediate assurance of justice for the rape of a five-year-old girl in Thanchi.
As part of these demonstrations, a protest rally was held at the Bandarban Press Club premises on Monday afternoon.
The programme was jointly organised by the Pahari Chhatra Parishad and the Hill Women Federation. Prior to the rally, protesters held a demonstration march and formed a human chain in the town.
According to the sources, the five-year-old child from the Tripura community was raped on the night of Saturday, 23 May, in Nutun Para, Thanchi, by a 15-year-old youth identified as Bijoy Barua.
Police arrested the accused on Sunday, 24 May, and sent him to jail through the court.
During the rally, demonstrators demanded the rapid submission of a charge sheet and the guarantee of a fair trial.
Speakers at the event included U Kya Hla Marma, President of the Bandarban district branch of Pahari Chhatra Parishad; human rights activist Kripa Tripura; Hill Women’s Federation leader Eching Marma; and Rimon Tanchangya, among others.
In addition to the district town demonstrations, a human chain programme was also held at the Thanchi Upazila headquarters on Monday afternoon to press for the same demands.
