‘Project Hail Mary’ maintained strong momentum in its second weekend, earning $54.5 million and solidifying its position as 2026’s biggest hit so far.
The Phil Lord and Chris Miller sci-fi adventure, starring Ryan Gosling, fell just 32 per cent from its opening weekend and has now grossed $300.8 million worldwide.
The $200 million Amazon MGM production faced little new competition and retained premium format screens, outperforming the second-weekend hold of 2023’s ‘Oppenheimer’, which took $46.7 million.
By contrast, Warner Bros.’ horror release ‘They Will Kill You’ opened to a modest $5 million. The R-rated film stars Zazie Beetz as a woman targeted for sacrifice while working as a maid.
Analysts suggest the horror genre may be approaching saturation, with new releases every weekend for the past 14 weeks. Other horror titles this weekend included IFC’s ‘Forbidden Fruits’, which earned $1.2 million, and last week’s ‘Ready or Not 2: Here I Come’, which has grossed $16.3 million domestically.
Family films continue to perform strongly. Pixar’s ‘Hoppers’ took second place with $12.2 million in its fourth weekend, bringing its global total to $297.6 million. The film will face competition next weekend from Universal Pictures’ ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’, which is expected to have the biggest opening of 2026.
