Police have arrested the prime suspect in the murder of a mother and daughter in Anwara upazila of Chattogram.
Rimon Barua was arrested from Patiya Police Station area on Sunday night following a series of raids.
Police also recovered the knife used in the killings and a mobile phone belonging to one of the victims.
The victims were identified as Eni Barua, 40, and her daughter, Priyanti Barua, 16. Eni’s five-year-old son, Piyas Barua, survived the attack and remains in critical condition.
Speaking at a press conference on Monday, Chattogram District Superintendent of Police Masud Alam said the murders took place at the victims’ residence on Saturday night.
Investigation teams from the district’s Detective Branch and Anwara Police Station tracked down the suspect using intelligence surveillance and information technology.
During primary interrogation, the suspect confessed to the killings, police said.
According to police, he had been hiding behind the house with a knife, intending to steal some legal stamps related to the loans taken by Eni’s husband, Sujan Barua.
When Eni spotted him and screamed, he stabbed her. Hearing that, Priyanti rushed to the scene and was also stabbed.
While fleeing, the suspect took Eni’s mobile phone. Based on his information, police recovered the sharp weapon from a canal behind the house and the phone from a ditch near Patiya railway line.
Police said further investigation is ongoing.
