Law Minister Md Asaduzzaman has said political leaders must first rid themselves of corruption if the country is to effectively tackle graft and irregularities.
“The first condition for ending corruption is that the political leadership and politicians who call for an end to corruption must themselves be free from it. Otherwise, we will fail,” he said.
The minister made the remarks while addressing a views exchange with local teachers and journalists at the BNP office in Shailkupa upazila of Jhenaidah on Wednesday morning.
Speaking about the challenges facing educators, Asaduzzaman said dealing with the current generation was becoming increasingly difficult, as more young people were turning to drugs.
He urged teachers to take a fresh approach to teaching students and adopt timely, well-planned measures to address the problem.
“The younger generation must be brought away from drugs, and we need to rethink how we address their needs,” he said.
The minister also warned that corruption in recruitment would not be tolerated, saying no one involved in financial transactions to secure appointments would be spared.
He further criticised school managing committee chairpersons who mistreat headteachers, saying such behaviour was unacceptable.
At the same time, he said headteachers who disrupt the learning environment and engage in embezzlement would also face consequences.
Teachers from private schools, colleges and madrasas in Shailkupa, along with journalists from print and electronic media, attended the meeting.
