Newly elected Members of Parliament (MPs) in the upcoming national election may take their oath from either a person appointed by the President or the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC), according to Law Adviser Asif Nazrul.
Speaking to the media at the Secretariat on Thursday, Asif Nazrul clarified the process for administering the oath to MPs following the election.
“There are two options,” he said. “Firstly, there is no provision for the former Speaker or Deputy Speaker to administer the oath. Secondly, if the oath needs to be taken within three days of the election result announcement, it will be conducted by a person nominated by the President, based on the advice of the Chief Adviser. For example, the current Chief Justice could administer the oath, should he agree.”
Asif Nazrul further explained that if the oath cannot be administered within three days, the Chief Election Commissioner will have the authority to carry out the procedure.
The 13th National Parliamentary Elections and the referendum are scheduled for 12 February.
