Newly elected Chandpur-3 MP Sheikh Farid Ahmed Manik has handed over several of his own party workers to police following post-election violence in the city.

The unrest began on Thursday during voting in Ward 13 of Chandpur municipality and escalated on Friday when two groups armed with locally-made weapons clashed after the polls.

Authorities identified the individuals involved on Friday night.

Five student party workers were later handed over to Chandpur Model Police Station under the leadership of Jubo Dal General Secretary Foyez Dhali. Those arrested include Nahidul Islam Jony, 22, son of Nasir Gazi; Mobarak Hossain Bepari, 26, son of Latfur Rahman; and Jony Gazi, 30, son of Ibrahim Gazi.

Later, two more youths, Monir and Fahim, from the Wireless Bazar area, were also taken into custody.

Md Foyez Ahmed, Officer-in-Charge of Chandpur Model Police Station, confirmed the detainees are being held at the station and said legal action will follow after verification.

Police continue efforts to apprehend others involved in the incident.
