BNP-nominated candidate for the Dhaka-9 constituency Habibur Rashid Habib on Tuesday said politics should be practiced as a means of serving people and ensuring national development, rather than merely seeking power.
He made the remarks while speaking as the chief guest at a free medical camp organised by Khilgaon Model College unit Chhatra Dal, held in the capital to offer prayers for the salvation of the late BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia.
Habib said those involved in politics bear a greater responsibility to act with integrity and accountability. “Our conduct, words, and actions must inspire honest and patriotic citizens outside politics to come forward and contribute to building the nation,” he said.
Emphasizing service-oriented politics, he added that the role of politicians extends beyond electoral victory. “Our duty is not only to attain power, but to serve the people and the country. Through such politics, we want to build the future of Bangladesh,” he said.
He praised the initiative taken by Chhatra Dal leaders and activists, describing the medical camp as a practical example of standing beside the people and working for the development of educational institutions. “We will always support such positive efforts,” he said.
Habib also highlighted his personal connection with Khilgaon Model College, recalling that it was once the only educational institution in the area. “I visited this college many times during my student life. Its development means the development of our locality and the progress of future generations,” he said.
Assuring full support for the academic and infrastructural development of the college, Habib expressed hope that it would become a renowned educational institution. He said efforts would be made to ensure the college reaches a standard where admission would be competitive and its reputation recognized both nationally and internationally.
Stressing the importance of action over outcomes, Habib said victory or defeat was not the ultimate goal. “What matters most is working for the people. We have always stood beside this college and will continue to do so in the future,” he added.
He also paid tribute to the late Chhatra Dal leader Nuruzzaman Jony, saying his sacrifice would remain a lasting source of inspiration for party activists.
