Barrister Zaima Rahman, daughter of BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman, has asserted that political parties must take responsibility for the security of women.
She made these remarks on Sunday while addressing a seminar held at the BISS conference room in the capital.
Calling for an increase in the participation of women in policy-making, Zaima emphasised the necessity of creating and maintaining a “pipeline” that extends from student leadership to local government.
She noted that without establishing and sustaining this continuity, necessary facilities would remain unavailable, preventing capable female leaders from accessing opportunities.
Highlighting the importance of mentorship and guidance, she remarked, “If someone does not have political and civic responsibilities, how will they understand the right path to follow?”. Using a metaphor, she asked, “If there is no shade like that of a palm tree, how will the small tree grow big?”.
She further observed that while men often enjoy various facilities and opportunities, women are not provided with the same, stressing that women must also have connections rather than leaving everything to men.
Regarding the role of finance in politics, Zaima stated that economic inequality must be addressed by providing more facilities. She argued that if female leaders are granted such support, the barriers preventing women from participating in politics will diminish.
Urging for the merit of the youth to be utilised, she expressed a vision for a “different kind of country”.
She concluded by stating that a change in thinking is essential and reiterated that political organisations must take the lead in ensuring women’s safety.
