Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has directed the immediate relocation of four inter-city bus terminals outside the capital to alleviate traffic congestion and modernise the city’s traffic management system.
The decision was finalised during a meeting regarding the mitigation of traffic jams and the modernisation of traffic management, held on Monday at the Cabinet Division in the Secretariat.
Prime Minister’s Deputy Press Secretary Hasan Shiplu briefed the media, mentioning that Tarique ordered the four inter-city terminals to be moved outside the city limits as quickly as possible.
According to the decision, the Fulbaria-Gulistan bus terminal will be shifted to Keraniganj. The Mohakhali bus terminal will be moved to Purbachal on a temporary basis before being permanently relocated near Tongi.
Furthermore, the Gabtoli inter-city bus terminal is set to move to Hemayetpur, while the Sayedabad and Jatrabari bus terminals will be relocated to Kanchpur.
The deputy press secretary added that the prime minister also emphasised the urgent need to move various bus counters scattered across different parts of the capital to designated locations.
AI signalling and modernisation
The meeting, chaired by the prime minister, included detailed discussions on modernising the capital’s traffic system and the installation of AI (Artificial Intelligence) cameras.
Tarique expressed his satisfaction with the benefits derived from the implementation of AI cameras in traffic signalling. This was the prime minister’s third meeting focused specifically on traffic management and gridlock reduction in the capital.
The high-level meeting was attended by Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed, Road Transport and Bridges Minister Shaikh Rabiul Alam, State Minister Habibur Rashid Habib, and Member of Parliament Shamsur Rahman Shimul Biswas.
Other senior officials present included Abdus Salam, administrator of Dhaka South City Corporation; Shafiqul Islam Khan, administrator of Dhaka North City Corporation; Cabinet Secretary Nasimul Ghani; Principal Secretary ABM Abdus Sattar; Home Secretary Monzur Morshed Chowdhury; and Rajuk Chairman Riazul Islam, along with secretaries and top officials from relevant ministries.
