On the occasion of Eid‑ul‑Adha, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has visited the graves of his father, former president Ziaur Rahman, and his mother, former prime minister Khaleda Zia.
His wife Zubaida Rahman accompanied him.
After attending the main Eid congregation at the National Eidgah in Dhaka on Thursday morning, the prime minister went to Sher‑e‑Bangla Nagar’s Zia Udyan to pay respects at his parents’ mausoleum.
There, he offered prayers seeking forgiveness for the souls of his parents. Following the prayers, he, along with his wife, joined party leaders and activists in paying tribute. Several senior members of the cabinet were also present.
From Zia Udyan, Tarique proceeded to Banani graveyard, where he visited the graves of his younger brother, Arafat Rahman Koko, and his father‑in‑law, Mahbub Ali.
Later they visited the graves of army officers killed in the 2009 BDR mutiny at Banani Military Graveyard, UNB reports.
Standing in front of the memorial monument, they joined a munajat seeking forgiveness and peace for the departed souls.
Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed, Social Welfare Minister AZM Zahid Hossain and State Minister for Local Government Mir Shahe Alam, were, among others, present.
On 25-26 February 2009, 74 people, including 57 army, were killed during the mutiny at the then Bangladesh Rifles (now Border Guard Bangladesh) headquarters in Pilkhana in the capital.
Most of the slain army officers were buried at the Banani Military Graveyard.
