Tajbir Hasan, a close associate of Prashanta Kumar Halder alias PK Halder, was sent to jail on Saturday after he was arrested on charges of embezzlement of huge money.
Police said Tajbir was arrested in Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) area of Dhaka while trying to flee to Turkiye on Friday midnight. He was handed over to Airport Police Station on Saturday noon and later produced before a court.
Magistrate Md Rakibul Hasan of Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court, Dhaka issued the detention order on Saturday afternoon. The court fixed October 14 for hearing on a remand petition after Sub-inspector Suman Mia, investigation officer of the case, sought seven-day remand.
State lawyer Kayum Hossain Nayan said Tajbir faces many allegations of crimes, including money laundering and fraud.
According to the case record, Tajbir has reportedly obtained citizenship and passports of Turkiye and Vanuatu. Intelligence sources identified Tajbir as a close aide to PK Halder.
In 2020, Tajbir’s travel agency Haltrip suddenly disappeared, leaving passengers and other agencies cheated out of hundreds of crores of taka.
Investigators revealed that Tajbir, who secured citizenship of Turkiye and Vanuatu, fled Bangladesh.
PK Halder, once a top executive of a financial institution and a bank, is accused of embezzling around Tk 3,500 crore. He has remained fugitive.
