Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has said that the underlying motives behind the Pilkhana massacre are now clearer to the public in a “fascism-free” Bangladesh and alleged that the nation had earlier been misled by lies and misinformation following the incident.
Minister made these remarks in a message issued on the occasion of National Martyred Army Day, observed on 25 February.
Reflecting on the tragedy, the minister noted that the massacre took place on this day in 2009 at the then BDR headquarters in Pilkhana, resulting in the martyrdom of 74 individuals, including 57 army officers.
He said the day was not observed with due importance in the years following 2009, but since the country became “fascism-free” in 2024, it has been officially commemorated as National Martyred Army Day.
Seeking salvation for the departed souls, he conveyed deep sympathy and condolences to the bereaved families.
The prime minister said the trial over the Pilkhana carnage is currently underway and declined to elaborate as the matter is sub-judice.
He said it is essential for citizens to understand that activities harmful to the independence and sovereignty of the country and its people were behind the massacre.
Describing the armed forces as a symbol of an independent nation’s honour, heroism and glory, he urged people to renew their commitment to prevent any conspiracy against the forces in the future.
“We shall stand united against any conspiracy that goes against the interests of the country and its people—let this be the pledge of Martyred Army Day,” he said.
