The streets of Birmingham are about to get darker, sharper and more dangerous, again.
‘Peaky Blinders’, the gritty gangster saga that has captivated audiences worldwide, is returning to television, this time following a new generation of the Shelby family after World War Two, reports BBC.
Although the sixth season, aired in 2022, was promoted as “the end of an epic story,” creator Steven Knight hinted that the Shelby story would continue, and now fans know how.
A new Peaky Blinders film, set at the start of the war, will see Cillian Murphy reprise his role as the indomitable gang leader Tommy Shelby.
But that’s just the beginning. Knight confirmed two upcoming TV seasons, “rooted in Birmingham and telling the story of a city rising from the ashes of the Birmingham Blitz.
The new generation of Shelbys have taken the wheel and it will be a hell of a ride.”
Set in 1953, the story will explore “the race to own Birmingham’s massive reconstruction project,” which the BBC describes as “a brutal contest of mythical dimension.”
In this city of unprecedented opportunity and danger, the Shelby family remains at its “blood-soaked heart.”
The series will air on the BBC in the UK and stream globally on Netflix. Murphy will serve as one of the executive producers, though the broadcaster has not confirmed whether any familiar faces from the previous era will return.
Since its debut in 2013, Peaky Blinders has chronicled the rise of the Shelby gang across the 1920s and 30s, winning acclaim including the 2018 TV Bafta Award for Best Drama. The upcoming film, titled ‘The Immortal Man’, will star Murphy alongside Oscar nominee Barry Keoghan, Adolescence actor Stephen Graham and Dune’s Rebecca Ferguson.
Fans can expect a potent mix of ambition, danger and family loyalty as the Shelby legacy continues; proving that in Birmingham, the Blinders are far from finished.
