Acclaimed Bengali actor Parno Mittra is set to begin a new chapter in her career, making her debut as a producer with The Music Teacher, a British-Indian short film starring Raima Sen, says Variety.
The film is scheduled to begin principal photography in Kolkata later this month and is being co-produced by Tabernacle Street Films (UK) and Unscripted Co, Mittra’s newly launched production banner.
Written and directed by Shrimoyee Chakraborty, The Music Teacher marks her first Bengali narrative film after directing the documentary Spirit of the Wildflower and creating the series India Bites.
Inspired by Chakraborty’s mother, the story is set in North Kolkata and follows a young man battling depression who rediscovers hope through a teacher of Rabindra Sangeet—the iconic songs composed by Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore.
The film celebrates Bengal’s rich musical heritage while exploring themes of resilience, healing and human connection.
Raima Sen will play the title character, while Niranjan Mondal, known for Laughtersane, joins the cast in a key role.
Renowned editor Aarti Bajaj, whose credits include Jab We Met, Rockstar, Highway, Tamasha, Sacred Games, Jubilee and Amar Singh Chamkila, has also come on board as co-producer.
Mittra, who has spent more than two decades in Bengali cinema with acclaimed films such as Doob (No Bed of Roses), Rajkahini, Apur Panchali and Ranjana Ami Ar Ashbona, described the project as the beginning of a new creative journey.
“The Music Teacher embodies the kind of cinema I want Unscripted Co to champion—stories that are deeply rooted, emotionally resonant and capable of travelling across cultures,” Mittra said.
“After more than two decades as an actor, producing this film marks an exciting new chapter in my creative journey. As our first production, this project represents the beginning of the vision I have for Unscripted Co, and I couldn’t have asked for a more inspiring team to bring it to life.”
Director Chakraborty called the film “a love letter” to her mother, Rabindra Sangeet and Kolkata.
“The Music Teacher is my love letter to my mother, to Rabindra Sangeet and to Kolkata. It’s an incredibly personal story, and I’m honoured to be making it alongside such an extraordinary team,” she said.
Co-producer Aarti Bajaj added that producing the film felt like a natural progression after years of shaping stories in the editing room, describing the project as “intimate, deeply moving and profoundly human.”
