Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday thanked US President Donald Trump for extending a ceasefire with Iran that had been set to expire and pressed both sides to continue negotiations.
“I sincerely hope that both sides will continue to observe the ceasefire and be able to conclude a comprehensive ‘Peace Deal’ during the second round of talks scheduled at Islamabad for a permanent end to the conflict,” Sharif wrote on X.
Trump on Tuesday prolonged the ceasefire with Iran to allow more time for peace negotiations, as Tehran’s deadline to end the pause passed without incident.
Trump indefinitely pushed back the end of the two week truce, crediting a request from mediator Pakistan and stressing the need to give Iran’s “fractured” leadership time to form a proposal. But he said the US blockade of Iran’s ports — a sticking point for Tehran — would continue.
