Armed assailants opened fire on the home of Pakistan fast bowler Naseem Shah in the Mayar area of Lower Dir district, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, in the early hours of Monday, according to local police. No injuries were reported in the incident, which occurred at around 1:45 a.m., when attackers fired multiple rounds at the main gate before fleeing the scene.
Police later inspected the site and confirmed bullet marks were visible on the gate. Following the attack, five suspects were taken into custody for questioning, while CCTV footage from nearby houses has been collected as part of the ongoing investigation. Security in the area has since been tightened.
At the time of the incident, Naseem was with the national team at their hotel in Rawalpindi, where Pakistan are preparing for the first ODI against Sri Lanka, set to begin on Tuesday. The 22-year-old pacer is not expected to leave the squad despite the attack.
Naseem’s brothers, Hunain Shah, 21, and Ubaid Shah, 19, are both domestic cricketers. It remains unclear whether they were at home during the shooting.
After the incident, Naseem’s father filed a police report and met with local authorities. Preliminary investigations suggest the attack was not an act of terrorism but may have stemmed from a family or regional dispute. However, Naseem’s family has stated they have no known enemies, while local residents described the family as well respected in the community.
